Apple's new Thunderbolt display may not offer a lot in terms of new display panel technology, but that doesn't mean it is behind the days or with a lack of quality. Besides simply being big, it provides everything that most users could possibly want. LED backlighting provides for more precise lighting control, lower energy use, and black level reproduction. Meanwhile, IPS display technology enables vivid colors and wide viewing angles. And just to add some extra sprinkes of awesome, the resolution is 2560x1440.
Though Apple has dropped the "Cinema Display" manufacturer from this new product, it would still apply. This is a monitor which is geared towards the enjoyment of multimedia content like movies, photos as well as video games. The use of high-gloss glass as opposed to a matte surface is proof that. You'll also receive 3 USB 2.0 ports, a FireWire 800 port, and an Ethernet port. These ports can behave as extensions of the connected Mac, which is handy in some instances. MacBook Airs, for instance, lack Ethernet available at the same time an option, but can use an Ethernet connection via this display.
What's lacking is, of course, HDMI and DVI. The insufficient USB 3.0 ports is another downer, though many competitors have not yet offer USB 3.0 as well. The connections available on the Thunderbolt display is sensible if you are connecting it with a Mac, but when you aren't, it will seem rather limited.
The speakers about this display can be a 2.1 system which supplies reasonably adequate sound. However, like all single built-in monitor speakers ever made, the insufficient proper sound staging limits enjoyment. Many external speaker options under $100 will give you better quality of sound, and you should want to purchase this kind of solution until you almost never tune in to music, watch free movies online or play games. If you don't watch movies online or play games though, you probably wouldn't be buying this monitor.
