Big oil company propaganda with a heart! Just the free movie we'd like for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one with the most lyrical American films available. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation inside United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress to be "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of an Cajun boy and the family, living about the bayous you might say of life that we can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land towards the oil company, which comes in, drills, leaving everything the same as it was, clean and unspoiled with the exception that the family features a little more money. (Yes, it absolutely was funded with the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends almost all of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating down the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, along with his pet raccoon. He never wears an existence preserver or shoes... doesn't even have a cell phone to contact case he gets struggling. There is not much story, simply a celebration (in these stunning grayscale photography that you could well wonder what the big deal is approximately color) of an way of life that's no longer along with us.
All of the actors were amateurs, and then for most, this became their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. A monochrome silent film that ends which has a woman being burned alive? Oh, yes, just what every family needs at Thanksgiving. But, I have 3 good reasons for including The Passion of Joan of Arc on this pair of free movies for Thanksgiving.
First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was ever made. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died believing that the last copy have been destroyed. In a bit of weirdness that sounds more like a movie as opposed to truth, a virtually complete print was discovered in 1981 in a very janitor's closet of an Norwegian mental institution.
Finally, I am grateful that we can watch this magnificent film, on many lists with the greatest films ever, at no cost online at Gloria.tv, a Roman Catholic video site.
Maria Falconetti (more), who plays Joan, suffered a psychological breakdown during the making of this film, and she never made another film. Pauline Kael (more), a notoriously demanding film critic, asserted Falconetti's performance "may are the finest performance ever upon film."
